Con Dao Day 1

Well actually this is day two here.   The first day we went on a walking tour of the nearest prison.  It is kind of funny, becuase the people I went with are ex-patriots so they don’t look at it the same way as the locals.  The tour guide was talking about bad americans and things like that and the majority of people on the tour worked for an american company.  I will admit that the conditions were very bad and there representation of what the prisoners went through was pretty graphic.  They used statues to show the prisoners chained up and the guards with guns and whips.  I was asked how I felt aobut it and I did not have an answer.  I did not put anyone there and did not have anything to do with it.  After that we went back to the resort and had dinner and walked around the small town a little bit.  Just like the last time I was in Vietnam, it amazes me the conditions that people in the less populated areas live in.  Even in the town itt was nothing like being at home.  The people are friendly though.

Today (Day 2 so far)  I woke up and went for a motorbike ride along the coast.  I think I was able to get some good pictures, but I have not looked at them yet.  The food has been good, but they only have seafood on the island.  I have been eating it, but it is not my favorite.  I have been eating well though and have not gone hungry.

Flight to Con Dao Island

We got up early today to check out of our hotel to catch a flight to Con Dao island. Apparently this island was used as a prison colony dating back to the French occupation. We met at the office and took a bus to the airport. I believe that the flight is 90 percent Bamboo employees. I was able to make a quick call home and I realized that I am a little homesick already. I have only been gone three days and have 11 more to go. I hope there is a descent Internet connection on the island. It is weird how much the world has changed where you can go to a remote island and still be able to check your facebook accounts and email. I wonder I there is anywhere in the world that is not connected to the Internet.

Vietnam Trip 2009 – Day 1

Well, we finally landed.  Overall the trip was uneventful, except for the landing in Narita.  That was a little worrisome.  It felt like the plane might flip over.  I am sure I am over reacting, but it was a weird feeling.  The other small snafu occured when we went through customs in Vietnam.   First, the customs agents wanted to open our boxes that we broght, and then they did not know how to charge us for the MP3 players that we brought.   Once we got that all sorted out, we went outside to be greeted  by a large group of our Vietnam office employees.  That was a little surprising, because it was almost midnight when we got out of customs.  We went by the office to drop off all the presents that we brought and that were sent with us.  Then on the way to the hotel, my boss discovered that the customs agent never returned his visa or customs declaration form.  He ended up having to run back out to the airport, and luckily they had his documentation and returned it to him.  That was a disaster that was barley missed.

Once in the hotel, a little perk was discovered.  Last year we had to go to the Executive area to use the internet.  This year it is provided free in the room.  This makes it a little easier to make voip calls home.  I don’t have to worry about people just listening to everything I say, not that I care, but it is nice to use the phone in private.

After 5 hours of sleep, it was time to get ready and to head to the office.  I remember a little bit of the city and to me it seems like they are still doing alot of construction.  It also seems like there are more cars on the road then the last time I was here.  I even saw a BMW dealership with two M4’s sitting in the window.  To me that is a little crazy, since there still does not appear to be anywhere to park your car.  Maybe I am missing something.  Well, time to get working, hopefully more later.

Wasabi Kit Kat

I may have just seen the most interesting thing in a while. A wasabi flavored Kit Kat. I stopped to get a bite to eat at a little cafe in the Narita airport and saw it. I have to be honest and say I did not taste or buy it. Maybe when we are headed home.

Still In The Air

Still 4 hours until we get to Narita, Japan. I was able to get a little sleep, but I am trying to stay awake until we land in Ho Chi Minh. That way I can sleep the night away. I am blowing through movies and tv shows. Right now I am waching a Nat Geo special about the sahara desert. There is a fenif fox that is smaller than a cat. They are really neat looking.
As we flea overhe Arctic Ocean, I could see the ice pack. I wonder if it is the same as last year or if it has shrunk. It loomed more solid than it did two years ago when I flew over it before.
One new thing on this trip was at Dulles Airport. This was the first time I did not get to ride on one if the transports. We used the walkway (I am sure everyone does, it was my first though). I believe it was much faster getting to the gate.

Flying To Vietnam

Eating curried pork and noodles. I even ate all my brocolli. We are currently over Canad east of Michigan. I am watching Fast and Furious. I am glad that I have not watched many movies recently. There are quite a few on the airplane entertainment system that I have not seen. I am also enjoying my headphones. They don’t totally kill the noise, but they probably cut down 80 percent of the airplane noise. The food was actually pretty good. I have to admit that I did not eat the sushi. I am near the back of the plane on the flight to Narita. I have the whole three seat section to myself. If I want to lay down later, I will be able to. So far so good on my second trip.

Leaves, Leaves, Leaves

Here is all the leaves that have fallen at our house so far.  We still have one fairly good sized maple tree to lose it’s leaves, but this is the majority.  If the town did not vacuum the leaves from in front of our house, I do believe that the leaves would still be in my yard.  I am sure that I would not try to bag all of these.

Finally moved in.

After a whirlwind summer where we had to move out of our old place in less than two weeks and finding and buying a new house, we finally moved in.  We got almost everything moved, just a few items at different places that still need to be moved, but functionally we are in.  We got our washer and dryer delivered, they seem to be working well.  Our only issue was that the upstairs toilet overflowed and ruined the dining room ceiling.  We were able to remove the ceiling without to much trouble, now I just have to get it to the dump.  Our trash service will not pick up that kind of debris.

Hopefully every night I can get something small done.

Pharaoh got hives.

Last night while walking the dogs, Pharaoh ran into something that caused him to have an allergic reaction. His head swelled up and hives popped up all over his body. Since his snout was swelling up we decided to take him to the vet last night. They gave him a shot of benadryl and shortly after that the swelling subsided. Now he has a stylish band-aid. If only we knew what caused the reaction I would feel better, then we could avoid this in the future.

Graduation day is around the corner.

The planning has begun. Kyle is about to graduate, so we are planning his party. He seems to believe that he is going to cook for it. That should be difficult wearing a purple wig. We are excited to see him finally be graduating. You can see how excites he is to be shopping. So far the menu is chicken and pasta, but that will probably change.
